# My assistant doesn't use memex

> What to check when an assistant can't reach memex or a memex tool seems to be missing.

Work through these in order.

> **Self-hosted memex**
>
> First check that memex is running: `curl -fsS http://localhost:8080/api/health` answers `"status":"ok"`. An assistant on another machine needs the address you gave memex in `APP_BASE_URL`. See [On your network](https://docs.memex.tools/self-hosted-network).

### 1. Check the connection
In a new chat, ask: "Can you reach my memex? Tell me in a sentence what memex is." In memex, **Settings › Assistants** shows when each connection was last used. See [Check that it works](https://docs.memex.tools/check-connection).

### 2. Add memex again if a tool is missing
Assistants keep the list of memex tools from the day you added memex. If a tool is missing, or the assistant says memex has no such tool, remove memex from its connectors or apps and add it again. See [Connect an assistant](https://docs.memex.tools/connect).

### 3. Reconnect if it was refused
A connection you removed in **Settings › Assistants** no longer works. Connect the assistant again.

### 4. Allow memex's actions
If it asks before every action, or seems to stop waiting, allow memex's actions in the assistant. See [Stop the assistant asking every time](https://docs.memex.tools/allow-actions).
