# How the editor works

> The Markdown editor, its side rail, the editorial checks, importing a file into a draft, conflicts and deleting.

**New note** from the Notes screen, or **Edit note** on a note.

## The editor

A Markdown editor with live preview: markup is hidden except on the line you are editing, and **Write** / **Preview** switches to a full rendering. The toolbar offers undo and redo, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, headings, bullet, numbered and task lists, links, **Link to a note** and tables. Typing `[[` opens autocomplete over your note titles. Save with the button or Ctrl/⌘+S. Leaving with unsaved changes asks first.

## The rail

**Summary** with a counter: the target is about 350 characters, and longer is allowed. **Tags**: type to search your vocabulary or create a new tag; tags you have removed from your vocabulary are not offered, though typing one brings it back. **Original source** when the note came from a URL.

## Editorial assistant

**Analyze draft** checks the draft against what you already have: possible duplicates with a similarity score, notes the text names but does not link (one click inserts the link), and tags from your vocabulary the text uses. These checks run on your own data and cost nothing.

It also offers a stronger title and a description when descriptions are on for you. One sentence in the card says how: that they need your own key (with a link to **Settings › AI features**), that they use your own key, or which model writes them and how many analyses are left today, if there is a daily limit. Nothing is applied until you click it, and nothing is saved until you save.

## Import note

**Import note…**, for new notes only, fills the draft from a Markdown or text file; frontmatter `title:` and `tags:` are honoured. Nothing is saved until you save, and a note you save this way is verified because you saved it.

## Conflicts

If the note changed while you were editing (an approved proposal, a curator's edit, another tab), saving offers **Open current note**, **Keep editing** or **Overwrite with my version**. If an assistant has an edit waiting in the inbox, the editor says so before you save; saving your version discards that draft.

## Danger zone

**Delete this note** moves it to Deleted notes. If drafts are waiting on it, deleting also discards them, and the dialog says so. See [How deleting and restoring work](https://docs.memex.tools/how-deletion-works).
