# What every setting does

> Every pane of Settings and what each control in it changes.

Page: https://docs.memex.tools/every-setting

Settings is a dialog over whatever you were doing, opened from the gear at the top right or from the account menu. Six panes in two groups; on a phone, the section picker uses the same groups. Old settings links still reach their section.

All panes share one content grid and section spacing. Paired fields use equal columns and stack on phones. Connections, sign-in accounts, browsers, and curators use the same table layout, with labelled rows on phones and actions in the final column.

## Personal › Account

- **Your details**: your picture and name.
- **Sign-in methods**: linked providers, when each was added and last used, **Add** for the others, and **Remove** for any that is not your only way in.
- **Signed-in browsers**: sign out one browser or all the others.
- **Delete my account**: permanent and immediate. Type your email to confirm. Notes, history, deleted notes, tags, connections and the journal are destroyed, with no grace period. A link above the delete button takes you to **Notes › Export**.

> **Self-hosted memex**
>
> **Password** takes the place of **Sign-in methods**: the current password and a new one, and changing it signs out every other browser. Deleting the account also returns the server to its first run. See [Sign-in and password](https://docs.memex.tools/self-hosted-sign-in).

## Personal › Preferences

- **Appearance**: **Sunrise** (light) or **Midnight** (dark), note text size and font (Sans, Serif, Mono). These are remembered per browser. The header also switches themes.
- **Language**: the interface language, from those installed.
- **Date & time**: date format and time zone, per browser.
- **Map**: layout, note shape, link style and labels, saved to your account.
- **Version**: the version of memex serving the page.

### Writing notes

The presets for `memex-writing`. A two-sided switch chooses **Use memex writing rules** (left, the default) or **Use my own writing rules** (right); the side it points at is the one in use. With your own, memex-writing is off: assistants are not pointed at it, it leaves their skill list, and they follow only the writing rules you add as a skill on the Skills page. Without one there, nothing tells them how to write notes.

The table has one row per setting, with its choices, defaults first, and the exact text the current choice adds to the skill:

| Setting | Choices |
|---|---|
| **Scope** | **One subject**, **One idea** or **Whole topic**, plus **Keep it short**, which does not go with a whole topic and is disabled beside it |
| **Opening** | **Summary, then sections**, **Answer first** or **Context first** |
| **Format** | **Form follows content**, **Prose** or **Bullets**, plus **Minimal markup** |
| **Reasoning** | **Conclusion and reasons**, **Conclusions only** or **Full rationale**, plus **State how sure** and **Cite outside sources** |

Each change saves on its own and shows **Saving…**, **Saved** or **Not saved**; a change made meanwhile in another tab is refused and the current settings are shown. A line under the table says where assistants are pointed at the skill and which connections have loaded its current text: loaded, not followed. **The whole skill** shows the full text as your presets make it. Only you, in a browser, can read or change these settings.

### About you

Your profile note; see [How skills work](https://docs.memex.tools/how-skills-work). With none, **Add profile** opens two short screens over Settings. **Choose a few preferences** offers optional choices for answer detail and sensitive details in any notes, with nothing preselected; **Review changes** shows the exact sentences to add or remove, and **Save and continue** writes them. **Let your assistant add more** offers an example message to copy into a connected assistant's chat. Finishing returns to Settings.

With one, **Open profile** opens that note; with several, each is listed, none chosen for you. A profile waiting for your review says it is not in force. A failed lookup offers **Try again** instead of treating the profile as missing. **What assistants are told about it** shows, word for word, what every connection is told about your profile when it connects. **Ask an assistant to help write it** expands an example message you can copy.

## Your memex › Notes

- **Import** and **Export**: bring in files or ZIPs, or download the notes. See [How import works](https://docs.memex.tools/how-import-works) and [How export works](https://docs.memex.tools/how-export-works).
- **Tags**: every tag in use, with a count. Click one to search. The × opens a dialog to remove it from every note or merge it into another. Both are immediate and irreversible; no note is deleted. `skill`, `live-state` and `user-profile` show a padlock. **Blocked tag suggestions** lists removed words that Memex will not suggest again; **Start using** allows one again.
- **Deleted notes**: how many are restorable and **Open deleted notes**. See [How deleting and restoring work](https://docs.memex.tools/how-deletion-works).

## Your memex › Assistants

- **Connect an assistant**: setup instructions. For existing connections, press the button to open the guide; with no connections, the guide is already open.
- Connected assistants and agents, with rename and revoke controls. See [How connections work](https://docs.memex.tools/how-connections-work).
- **Note maintenance**: first choose a curator with **Make curator**, then copy the message under **Start a maintenance pass** to a chat with that assistant. Custom maintenance presets are not exposed in the interface. See [How curation works](https://docs.memex.tools/how-curation-works).

## Your memex › AI features

**Search** and **Descriptions and tags**, with usage and provider controls. Maintenance is in Assistants; Memex does not run a curator. See [How AI features work](https://docs.memex.tools/how-ai-features-work).
