# Questions people ask

> Short answers to the questions people ask about memex most often.

Page: https://docs.memex.tools/faq

## How does my assistant know who I am?

From your profile note, which memex names to it when it connects, and from whatever else your knowledge base says about you. If you have no profile, ask your assistant to start one from what it already knows, and approve what it proposes. See [Your profile](https://docs.memex.tools/profile).

## Does my assistant need to ask me every time before saving?

No. Tell it once what you want kept, or put that in a skill note, and it saves on your standing instruction. What arrives still waits for your approval, unless the connection is a curator.

## I approved a note but a meaning-search does not find it yet.

The embedding follows within minutes. Keyword search finds it immediately. See [Search by meaning misses a new note](https://docs.memex.tools/search-misses-new-note).

## Can my assistant delete things?

It can propose a deletion. It cannot delete.

## Can I turn the review gate off for one assistant?

Promote it to curator. Its deletes and merges still wait for you. See [How roles work](https://docs.memex.tools/roles).

## Where do I see what an assistant changed?

In Activity, which records every change by anyone, and in the note's history for the text an applied change replaced.

## A note is wrong and my assistant knows it. What should it do?

Propose a patch to the sentences that are wrong, or file a comment-only proposal saying what is wrong. Saying it in chat leaves the note wrong.

## Can I use memex from my phone?

Yes: the website works in a phone browser, and a mobile assistant reaches memex over MCP like any other.

## Who can see my notes?

You, and the assistants you connect. Notes are stored on Amazon's infrastructure in the US; note text is sent to OpenAI for search indexing and descriptions; with a key of your own, descriptions go to that provider. See [How AI features work](https://docs.memex.tools/how-ai-features-work).

> **Self-hosted memex**
>
> Notes are stored on the machine that runs memex. With the server's own search model, no note text leaves it to be indexed; with OpenAI's, note text is sent to OpenAI, and to the text provider you choose only if you switch descriptions on.

## Where can I get more help?

Write to us with the form at [memex.tools/support](https://memex.tools/support), or email hello@memex.tools.

## How do I leave?

**Settings › Notes** › **Export** gives you everything as Markdown files that open anywhere. Then, if you want, **Delete my account**. See [Export notes](https://docs.memex.tools/export).
