Self-hosted memex

Sign-in and password

The one account on a self-hosted memex, its setup code, its password, and what to do when the password is forgotten.

A self-hosted memex holds one account, and it signs in with an email address and a password. There is no Google, Apple, Microsoft or GitHub sign-in.

Opening the account

The first time memex is opened in a browser, it asks for an email address and a password, and creates the account and its knowledge base. That works for ten minutes after memex first starts. After that, since anyone who can reach the page could be the one opening it, it also asks for the setup code, which proves you run the server.

memex prints the setup code in its log when it starts:

docker logs memex

app:setup-code prints it again, and app:create-owner creates the account from a shell instead. See Commands.

Signing in

Sign in with that email address and password. Repeated wrong guesses from one address are refused for a few minutes.

Your email address is the one given when the account was created. It cannot be changed.

Change the password

In Settings › Account, Password takes the current password and a new one. Changing it signs out every other browser.

A forgotten password

memex sends no mail, so a forgotten password is replaced on the server. This sets a new one and signs out every browser:

docker exec -it memex php bin/console app:reset-password

Deleting the account

Deleting the account returns the server to its first run, with an empty memex and ten minutes again before the setup code is needed.
