What memex does not do
What memex deliberately is not, how it sits beside your assistants’ memory, and its limits.
What memex is not
- There is no AI inside memex. memex has no chat box and generates no text of its own. The thinking is done by you and by the assistants you already use. The one exception is optional: if you add a provider key of your own, memex can write a short description and file tags for a note you add on the website without them. See How AI features work.
- Nothing works on your notes by itself. No scheduler, no background pass, no resident model. If nobody asks, nothing happens. memex never tidies, curates or summarises anything unasked. The one thing it does on a clock is housekeeping: a deleted note’s text is purged after its thirty restorable days. What memex does keep is the record: who wrote what, and when.
- No chat box. You ask Claude, ChatGPT or whatever you use; it reads your memex and answers from your notes.
- One person, one knowledge base. There are no shared teams. Your assistants are the only other things that can reach your notes, and only on the terms you set for each.
- It is not a file store. Notes are Markdown and text. A PDF or a spreadsheet becomes a note about the document, written by your assistant when you ask; the original stays where it was.
- No transcripts. memex holds what somebody chose to save, so “what did I say in March” works only for what was kept.
- No folders, no nested tags, no collections. Tags, links and workspaces.
- Review is work. Held writes accumulate if the inbox is never opened. It is fine to let them sit; they are not applied meanwhile.
- Connecting takes a settings pane and a few minutes, not one click.
memex sits alongside the memory features your assistants already have. Those remember how you like an answer. memex holds the work you and your assistants produced and chose to keep, in your own words, readable by every assistant you connect.
Limits on memex.tools
- memex.tools is free. No pricing, no payment. Its limits are generous and may change.
- Search and descriptions have hourly and daily allowances. A key of your own lifts them. See How AI features work.
- A note body is at most 2 MB. A save, a proposal, an approval, a merge or a revision restore that would take a note past the limit is refused with the size it observed and the limit, and that write leaves nothing behind; earlier files in the same upload or import that fit stay saved and are listed. A note already over a lowered limit can still be shortened, retitled, deleted or brought back from Deleted notes as it was.
- A memex holds a limited number of notes and connections; drafts waiting for review count as notes. At a limit, a new note, a proposal of one, an upload, an import, bringing a note back from Deleted notes and a new connection are refused with the limit they met; reading, editing, deleting and export keep working. Delete notes or reject drafts to make room, and remove a connection you no longer use in Settings › Assistants. A key of your own does not lift these limits.
